Our Minister

Brother Christopher J. Turner

Chris Turner was born and raised in the city of Florence, Alabama. He was born again in the same city, under the tutelage of Brother Earnest Cobb at the Westside Church of Christ.

While at the Westside congregation, Brothers Jeffrey Boddie and Russell Cobb took him under their wings and taught him the art of congregational song leading. A few years later Turner placed membership at the Southside Church of Christ in Rogersville, Alabama, where Bro. Freeman Malone Jr. is the minister. There he also joined their noted song group “The Southside Singers.” For twelve years, they traveled together singing and writing soul stirring tunes. While attending college in Birmingham, Al., he performed with the spirited Inner City Singers, a traditional gospel quartet led by two dynamic gospel preachers whose direction kept him spiritually focused while away from home.

His professional music career began with internationally known Straight Company. For five years Turner traveled with the missionary gospel team full time throughout the United States and also carried the good news to Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and the Republic of South Africa. An accomplished writer and energetic performer, Chris Turner has written and recorded with some of the greatest names in Christian gospel music.

He was blessed to write the title song on former “Heatwave” lead singer Johnny Wilders’ gospel release “One More Day.” Turner conducts congregational singing at national, state, and international levels. Brother Turner also conducts music workshops across the country. He currently has five releases available on CD, “Dreamin,” “In the Fullness of Time,” “Grandma’s Church,” “I Don’t Mind Singing…Songs from the Book of Life,” and “Chris Turner Live,” a collection of live performances from various venues.

Throughout his career, Chris Turner has attracted a young following. Nicknamed, the pied piper by Jesse Murrah (“Essej” of Straight Company), he realized another calling in being a Youth Minister. For fourteen years he served the Southside Church of Christ in Durham, North Carolina where he mentored a large group of young people at his congregation as well as youth in the larger community of Durham. He was a board member of the CMCRL… (Calvary Ministries Church Recreational League…A coalition of Churches and mentors dedicated to the betterment of the youth of Durham, NC.) He is a regular teacher at the annual Southeastern Youth Conference for Christ. Chris has held seminars at state and national levels on Youth Ministry.

Chris has also held gospel meetings for youth and adults alike throughout the continental United States. His work has encouraged many souls, both young and young at heart. Chris is married to the former Karena Mayes of Sheffield, Alabama. They have three children, one son “Jalen” and two daughters “Kristina and Jamie.” In answering another call of the Master, Brother Turner is presently the Sr. Minister at the Sunset Rd. Church of Christ in Burlington, New Jersey. There he enjoys the full spectrum of ministry. He can be found hanging with the seniors, singing with the singers, running with the youth, and bringing the word to the congregation. Turner hopes to continue to minister to others in a manner that is historically astute, morally upstanding, and spiritually correct. Whether by singing, teaching, preaching, or other means, he desires to encourage and enlighten others that they may learn to live as the Creator would have them, and through him they may realize their God-given potential.

prayer

Our lives are busy and sometimes we forget to pray. Sometimes we may ask ourselves, “Why is prayer so necessary? Prayer is necessary because: 1. Prayer is God's way for getting things, and the great secret of all lack in our experience, in our life and in our work is neglect of prayer. James brings this out very forcefully in James 4:2: "You lust, and don’t have. You kill, covet, and can’t obtain. You fight and make war. Yo
